Nerve Block

Nerve block is a generic term applied to any procedure in which a local anesthetic is applied to a nerve.  This includes regional anesthetics such as those given during or after surgery but is often broadly applied in pain management to any kind of injection procedure.  For example, there are nerve blocks containing local anesthetics or anti-inflammatory medicine; destructive nerve blocks (called neurolytics) containing alcohol or phenol; diagnostic or therapeutic nerve blocks; and they can be placed in numerous locations throughout the body.

The best way for a patient and their doctor to use this term is to define it by stating what will be injected, where will it be placed, and what is the intention of the procedure.
